The Monopoly of Information Distribution

idea

It is simple. Journalists suffer because they relied the monopoly of information distribution and the Internet broke this.

Information is a good and therefore rules of demand and supply apply. We constantly desire information and since 1618, newspaper satisfied our need because they could acquire, edit and distribute information cheaper than anybody else.

This created a monopoly on the information distribution because newspaper and later on radio and television are the only option to broadcast information. Without any price pressure from competition, the media has been able ignore costs and charge high prices for advertising and to readers.

The Internet broke this monopoly in three ways. Firstly, millions of people like Janis Krums use Twitter, Facebook and YouTube to share information. Free. Secondly, every reader has an unique profile of interests and the Internet is able to satisfy this. Thirdly, business are able to target their customers better than ever before using services like Google AdSense.

Journalists suffer because they lost their monopoly on information distribution and all of its benefits. Unless newspapers redefine their purpose, society will be less likely to buy them.
